The Joe Serna Jr. CalEPA Headquarters Building is located in downtown Sacramento at the corner of 10th and I streets. There are many transportation options to this location.
Green Building Features
In December 1999, California Construction Link magazine awarded the new CalEPA building “Best of 1999 Awards–Outstanding Engineering.” The award was for “innovation in air handling, window placement, and recycling, resulting in a 25-story office tower with significant energy savings over California’s stringent energy codes.” CalEPA’s home includes many environmentally sensitive features (PDF).
Public Artwork
For those of you planning a visit, be sure to view the custom-designed artwork of four prominent artists dedicated to demonstrating the integration of art and the environment throughout the building. The artwork was the result of a Sacramento City ordinance that required a certain percentage of capital improvement construction costs be allocated for public art.
Sustainable Operations
CalEPA strives to continually reduce its ecological footprint by integrating pollution prevention and waste reduction into daily business operations. The Headquarters Building offers paper, plastic, bottle, can and food waste recycling; access to electric vehicles for work travel; environmentally preferable purchasing to increase use of recycled content products and reduce packaging; and use of web meeting technology and telework policies to cut carbon emissions.
