Maurice Lyles, Deputy Secretary for Public Policy

Maurice Lyles serves as Deputy Secretary of Intergovernmental Relations at the California Environmental Protection Agency, where he leads the Agency’s engagement with tribal governments and local, state, federal, and international partners to advance California’s environmental priorities and strengthen intergovernmental collaboration.

Prior to joining CalEPA, Maurice served as Southern California Regional Director in the Office of Governor Gavin Newsom, where he led regional engagement from San Luis Obispo to the California-Mexico border. Maurice worked closely with elected officials, tribal governments, community organizations, and business leaders to advance the Governor’s policy priorities.

Before joining the Governor’s Office, Lyles worked in academia and the nonprofit sector, advancing public policy, research, and cross-sector partnerships focused on strengthening California communities. Earlier in his career, he served in multiple roles in the United States Senate for Senator Barbara Boxer, including Field Representative and Constituent Representative, where he worked on a broad range of federal, state, and local policy issues affecting California communities.

Lyles earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and African American Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
