SACRAMENTO – The deadline to apply for the 2018 Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Awards (GEELA), the state’s highest environmental honor, has been extended until Tuesday, August 14.

To apply online, find the application at calepa.ca.gov/awards/geela/.

Submissions are being accepted from individuals, organizations and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership for voluntary achievements in conserving California’s resources, protecting and enhancing the environment, building public-private partnerships, and strengthening the state’s economy.

GEELA recipients are chosen in five categories and one subcategory:

  • Climate Change
    • Automobile Dealer Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Promotion
  • Ecosystem and Land Use Stewardship
  • Environmental Education
  • Sustainable Practices, Communities or Facilities
  • Waste Reduction

The competition is open to all California residents, businesses, nonprofit organizations, professional and trade associations, communities, state and local government entities, tribes, and federal agencies operating in California. Those who applied previously are welcome to apply again.

Award recipients will be honored at a gala awards ceremony in December with government leaders and state legislators. Honorees will also be provided with the GEELA seal for use on their website and in materials that further establish their distinction as leaders in protecting and enhancing California’s environment.

Established in 1993, the GEELA is a competitive program administered by the California Environmental Protection Agency in collaboration with the California Natural Resources Agency; the California Department of Food and Agriculture; the California State Transportation Agency; the California Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency; the California Government Operations Agency; the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency; the California Health and Human Services Agency; and the Governor’s Office.
