Jason Boetzer, Deputy Secretary for
Local Program Coordination and Emergency Response

Portrait of Jason Boetzer, Acting Assistant Secretary for Local Program Coordination and Emergency ResponseJason Boetzer is the Deputy Secretary for Local Program Coordination and Emergency Response. He has more than 20 years of experience working in the environmental health field and 11 years as a manager/director implementing and leading environmental and public health programs at the state and local levels. 

In his current position, held since August 2019, he oversees the state’s implementation of the Unified Program and its 81 certified local agencies. The program ensures consistency in the administration, permitting and enforcement of regulatory standards for the management of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, underground storage tanks, and accidental releases. He is also responsible for coordinating CalEPA’s response to statewide emergencies. Most recently, Jason served as the Emergency Response and Refinery Safety Program Manager for CalEPA.

Before joining CalEPA, Jason served two years as Director of the Sacramento County Environmental Health Division. He also served 14 years in Calaveras County in various positions including Administrator of Calaveras County’s Environmental Management Agency, while also serving as the Director of Environmental Health and the County Air Pollution Control Officer. In his prior position, he was a manager for the Calaveras County Environmental Health Department.

Jason holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Public Health, from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire.  He is a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, Certified Underground and Above Ground Storage Tank Inspector and a Certified Hazardous Materials Technician.
