States, NGOs and Celebrities Want to Make Every Day Earth Day: Through Community-Specific Information, Everyone Can Make a Difference
Sacramento Ca., April 19--The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) joins Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission, Minnesota Office of Environmental Assistance (OEA), Florida DEP and all other states on the occasion of this 31st Earth Day celebration, to Make Every Day Earth Day by providing year round resources through the Earth's 911 hotline, 1-800-CLEANUP and Web site, www.CLEANUP.org. Earth Day 2001 is the day many people will choose to take an environmental initiative.
And when the day ends, there is an opportunity to make sure we keep this spirit alive for the next 364 days. Earth's 911 makes it easy for everyone to make a difference every day through its bilingual hotline and Web site that contain the only nationwide database of community-specific environmental resources and information.
"Earth Day is about educating people about doing something for the environment -a great message indeed," said Winston H. Hickox, Secretary of Environmental Protection of Cal/EPA, "But now in California and across the nation, we feel that we can realistically Make Every Day Earth Day, especially when all the information you need is available free to the public through the Internet and a toll-free hotline 24/7."
By simply calling toll-free 1-800-CLEANUP or visiting www.CLEANUP.org and entering a ZIP Code, people can access the locations of recycling centers and hazardous waste drop-offs, as well as review beach water quality (currently available in select cities), volunteer opportunities, an educational section and many tips to be more environmentally responsible in every community in the United States and Canada.
