DEBORAH L. BARNES APPOINTED CAL/EPA DEPUTY SECRETARY
SACRAMENTO - The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) today announced the appointment of Deborah L. Barnes as deputy secretary for law enforcement and counsel at Cal/EPA.
Since 1993, Barnes has been a deputy attorney general at the California Department of Justice, representing various state departments in state and federal litigation related to environmental and natural resources issues. Last year, she played an instrumental role in the purchase of the Headwaters Forest. Prior to that, she was an assistant federal defender and an associate with the Sacramento law firm of Weintraub, Genshlea, Hardy, Erick & Brown.
As deputy secretary for law enforcement and counsel, Barnes will be the senior attorney at Cal/EPA, supervising the legal staff and overseeing environmental regulatory and enforcement programs. she will provide policy recommendations to the agency secretary and assist in the development of legislative proposals.
Barnes received her law degree from University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, after graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, with a degree in sociology.
