Sacramento--California Secretary for Environmental Protection James M. Strock and corporate partners announced today the start of the California Environmental Protection Agency's (Cal/EPA) Environmental Hotline.

The Cal/EPA Hotline will allow Californians 24 hour access to local and statewide recycling/environmental information. The Hotline provides the most current information regarding opportunities for recycling and environmental resource data available in California. Access to this information will heighten public environmental awareness and further protection of California's environment and public resources.

"Governor Wilson has directed State agencies to find cost effective solutions to provide the best service to California citizens and the Cal/EPA Environmental/Recycling Hotline will provide citizens with information they need to act directly to protect our environment," said California Secretary for Environmental Protection James M. Strock. "The Hotline will empower Californians to become actively involved in environmental protection--and through these remarkable corporate partnerships, we hope this effort will spread across the world. We are pleased that California's new Hotline will serve as 'Earth's 911' for the environment."

"We are very pleased to congratulate the State of California for its enthusiastic support and implementation of the Environmental/Recycling Hotline," said Felicia Marcus, U.S. EPA's regional administrator. "The Hotline provides people with the one stop geographically-specific information they want to protect their families and communities. People want to do the right thing. They want to play a helpful role in cleaning their communities. The Hotline provides a convenient way to do that."

"Microsoft is pleased to be a primary contributor to the California Environmental Hotline," said Roger Britton, Corporate Executive Northern California District, Microsoft.

The Hotline is operated at no cost to California or the taxpayer and is a component of the United States Environmental/Recycling Hotline. The following companies and organizations attended today's event speaking in support of the Hotline: Microsoft, BP Solar, Home Depot, Raley's, California Against Waste, California Chamber of Commerce, California Manufacturers Association and Cal/EPA boards and departments.

We are proud to be a supporter of Earth's 911 because it exists solely for the purpose of making our world a better place in which to live and work. We agree with that goal and we want to be a part of its success," said Kathleen Tschogl, Manager Environmental and Regulatory Affairs, Raley's Supermarkets. At Raley's we are proud of our past contributions to the well-being of our communities through a variety of environmental programs."

Beginning today Californians can dial 1-800-CLEANUP (253-2687) or access on the Internet WWW.1800CLEANUP.ORG geographic specific information. Over time the Hotline will pool all of California's environmental and recycling information into one convenient information resource. By dialing the Hotline and entering their Zip Code citizens will have free access to community specific information.
