TORONTO, CANADA--The California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) announced today that Sergio Marchi, Canada's Minister of the Environment officially launched the Canadian Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program, developed in close partnership with and modeled after Cal/EPA's award-winning Environmental Technology Certification Program.
"We congratulate Minister Marchi and Canada on the successful development of their ETV Program. This is a significant accomplishment by the Canadian government in promoting environmental technologies that further environmental protection and economic growth," said Peter M. Rooney, Acting Secretary for Environmental Protection.
The launching of the Canadian ETV Program coincided with this week's Air & Waste Management Association workshop in Toronto on initiatives for accelerating the international deployment of environmental technologies.
Featured speakers at the workshop included Cal/EPA's Deputy Secretary for Environmental Technology Ann C. Heywood, who highlighted the significant accomplishments of Cal/EPA's Environmental Technology Certification Program and partnership with Canada's environmental protection agency, Environment Canada.
"The launching of the Canadian ETV Program represents a major step toward reciprocity between California and Canada in environmental technology certification and verification," said Deputy Secretary Heywood.
Since 1995, Cal/EPA and Environment Canada have exchanged information on procedures for verifying and certifying the effectiveness of technologies that reduce or provide remedy for environmental pollution. Both organizations have been working together towards reciprocity in their programs. This partnership with Canada is one in a series of Cal/EPA efforts to expand the verification and certification of environmental technologies across the nation and around the world. Cal/EPA has similar efforts with five other U.S. states, the German State of Bavaria, the Mexican State of Jalisco and a number of other countries.
