SAN DIEGO--Secretary for Environmental Protection, James M. Strock joined today with U.S. EPA officials, local government dignitaries and their Mexican counterparts at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the South Bay International Wastewater Treatment Plant in San Diego, California.

"This is a great day for the environment of California and Baja California," said Strock. "Cal/EPA will continue to work with all parties involved to ensure the protection of the environment and public health in the San Diego/Tijuana region."

The new treatment facility is an advanced primary plant, similar in design to San Diego's treatment plant at Point Loma. In the past, uncontrolled discharges of up to 10 million gallons per day of raw wastewater have flowed through the Tijuana River, and the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve to the beaches of south San Diego County and Playas de Tijuana.

"The completion of this wastewater treatment plant has been a high priority of the Wilson Administration and the collaborative efforts to build this plant is due to the leadership on both sides of the border," added Strock.

Cal/EPA will continue to provide technical support to Baja officials and others regarding wastewater  infrastructure improvements.
